Promit joined Maitland in September 2024 following the successful completion of his pupillage under the supervision of Tim Calland, Oliver Phillips, Jonathan Allcock, Gabriella McNicholas, and Narinder Jhittay

He is developing a broad commercial chancery practice and accepts instructions across all of Chambers’ practice areas, including Commercial Litigation, International Arbitration, Civil Fraud, Company and Partnership, Restructuring and Insolvency, Trusts, and Property.

Promit received an LLM in Commercial Law from the University of Cambridge, where he was nominated for the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship. He was also chosen as a Middle Temple Harold G Fox Scholar. Prior to this, he received his undergraduate degree with first-class honours in law from the National University of Juridical Sciences, India.

Before coming to the Bar, Promit gained extensive experience in international arbitration and litigation while working at Allen & Overy and Clifford Chance.

    • International Arbitration and Related Litigation

      Promit has considerable experience of international arbitrations and related court applications.

      Promit’s current instructions include:

      • Acting as sole counsel on behalf of the claimant in an arbitration concerning a charterparty dispute (English law governed, DIAC Rules, DIFC-seated)
      • Acting as junior counsel (led by Rodrigo Carè) in DIFC Court proceedings in connection with a DIFC-seated investor-State arbitration
      • Acting as junior counsel for a respondent in DIFC Court proceedings in connection with the enforcement of a c$1.5 billion ICC arbitration award
      • Acting as the secretary to an arbitral tribunal (presided over by Harish Salve KC) in a construction arbitration concerning claims and counterclaims worth c$115m (ICC Rules, Singapore-seated)

      Promit’s arbitration experience prior to joining Maitland included:

      • Acting on behalf of a bank in a London-seated ICC arbitration against an insurance company concerning disputes related to product distribution arrangements
      • Acting on behalf of the main contractor of a nuclear power plant in a London-seated LCIA arbitration against its subcontractors
      • Acting on behalf of the majority shareholders of an oilfield equipment manufacturing company in a Singapore-seated SIAC arbitration against the company’s private equity investors concerning allegations of fraud and breach of non-compete obligations
      • Acting on behalf of a South Asian State in two London-seated investment treaty arbitrations concerning disputes related to foreign investments in the mining and aviation sectors, respectively.
      • Acting on behalf of a US e-commerce company in a Delhi-seated SIAC arbitration and related litigation concerning shareholder disputes related to its equity investment in an Indian retail chain.
    • Commercial Litigation

      Promit is regularly instructed in litigations across the full spectrum of commercial disputes.

      Promit’s current instructions include:

      • Acting on behalf of the claimant in multiple proceedings in the High Court (KBD) in respect of a c$3m debt claim
      • Acting as sole counsel on behalf of the claimants in Gold Craft International and another v Mittal Jewellery Limited, a c£1m dispute concerning alleged breaches of gold jewellery export arrangements (listed for a 3-day trial in the Central London County Court in March 2026)
      • Acting as sole counsel on behalf of a minority shareholder in an investment company in an unfair prejudice petition commenced in the High Court (ICC) in connection with a failed property development project in London
    • Civil Fraud

      Many of Promit’s cases include a civil fraud element.

      Recent notable instructions include:

      • Acting (led by Siward Atkins KC and Edlyn Livesey) on behalf of the claimant in Foundation Stimm v King & Spalding and another, involving wide-ranging claims in connection with investment in a luxury property development project in Central London, which settled shortly before the start of a two-week trial in the High Court (Business List)
      • Acting (led by Ryan Turner) on behalf of the claimants in a group action against an insurance company concerning deceit
      • Advising a Cypriot company in a claim for reversal of fraudulent transactions related to the acquisition of an aparthotel in London allegedly entered into by the company’s officers without due authority
    • Company & Partnership

      Many of Promit’s cases concern, or raise issues of company law.

      Recent notable instructions include:

      • Acting as sole counsel on behalf of a minority shareholder in an investment company in an unfair prejudice petition commenced in the High Court (ICC) in connection with a failed property development project in London
      • Advising a Cypriot company in a claim for the reversal of fraudulent transactions related to the acquisition of an aparthotel in London allegedly entered into by its officers without due authority
    • Insolvency & Asset Recovery

      Promit is regularly instructed in corporate and individual insolvency cases, on behalf of creditors and debtors. His experience includes appearing in contested bankruptcy and winding up petitions, insolvency administration order petitions, appeals against rejections of proofs of debt, and contempt applications made by liquidators.

      Promit has co-authored (with Rosanna Foskett) a practice note for Lexis PSL on foreign creditors in English insolvency proceedings. He regularly authors case analyses for LexisNexis on notable judgments concerning Restructuring Plans.
