Our offices at 7 Stone Buildings include facilities for client conferences (including a room with an induction loop), video and Skype conferencing, a mediation suite, training rooms, web access and access for clients with a disability. We will consider all requests for reasonable adjustments to be made to our facilities in order to assist any person with a disability wishing to use our services.
Barristers at Maitland practice as self-employed, referral professionals. They are regulated by the Bar Standards Board. You can search the Barristers’ Register on the Bar Standards Board’s website here. They can be instructed by one of two main routes.
1. PROFESSIONAL CLIENT ACCESS
The following may instruct barristers either on behalf of clients or on their own account and you may contact the Clerks to obtain a quote for legal services:
- Solicitors
- Other authorised litigators
- Parliamentary agents, patent agents, trademark agents and notaries
- European lawyers registered with the Law Society
- Employed barristers and/or European lawyers registered with the Bar Council
- Legal Advice Centres designated by the Bar Council
- Licensed conveyancers (with regard to the provision of conveyancing services)
- Foreign lawyers
2. LICENSED ACCESS
Licensed access is a licensing system whereby organisations or individuals who are suitable to instruct barristers because they have expertise in particular areas of the law can apply to the Bar Council to be licensed to instruct barristers directly in those areas. The licence can cover advice or representation or both and permit licensees to instruct barristers either on their own affairs or on behalf of their clients.
We accept instructions from members of other professions and public bodies for advisory, tribunal and arbitration work, subject to various conditions and restrictions, under the Bar Standard Board’s Licensed Access system. All of our barristers accept instructions under this system, subject always to the suitability of the work to the barrister’s practice and areas of expertise.
